# Protecting our waterways Water is a fundamental part of the Horizons Region, sustaining our physical well-being and natural ecosystems. When our rivers, lakes, and streams are healthy, their life force, or *mauri*, thrives and supports both people and wildlife. However, many of our local waterways face significant environmental challenges. Over time, everyday activities on the land can cause harmful contaminants to wash into our water. General issues like soil erosion, bacteria from waste, and excess nutrients can drastically alter stream health. When left unmanaged, these environmental pressures can: * **Cloud the water** and block vital sunlight. * **Fuel the rapid growth** of algae. * **Smother the riverbed homes** of fish and aquatic insects. * **Make swimming spots unsafe** for our families and pets. Understanding these challenges is the first step toward restoring and protecting our water for future generations. *** ### Explore the pressures  **Click on the glowing icons above to learn more about the challenges to the region’s surface water quality.** For more information, you may be interested in reading our latest [State of Environment Synthesis Report](https://www.horizons.govt.nz/HRC/media/Media/State-of-the-Environment-Horizons-Region-2025-Print.pdf) or browsing the [LAWA website](https://www.lawa.org.nz/).
